So today at work dispatch puts out a call for a child (about 10) walking on the freeway. I responded to the location and find Courtesy Patrol speaking with the child who was now on the service drive. I go up to talk with them and find out this child who was diagnosed as "special needs" was told to walk home by his teacher after his taxicab didn't arrive. I spoke with the child (actually 8 years old) and found him to be leery of the police (especially police cars). He refused to allow me to drive him home. He would however allow me to walk him home. So what do I do? I climbed the fence that separated us and proceeded to walk this little one home. We passed the drunks, the derelicts, the would be criminals and I told him these were the reasons why he should not walk alone. After walking for quite a while and finding him to be uncertain about his whereabouts and his not knowing his address or phone number, I asked him for his mother's name. He was able to provide that and I contacted dispatch who did a search of the name in hopes of a possible address. I also called for a patrol car to take us to his home. When we arrived, I found his grandmother in the driver's seat of her car talking to two DPS officers. Seems the parents, worried about their child had gone to the school. The DPS officers had their team out looking for this child and the grandmother, presumably, was going to look for him. When we reunited the child with his grandmother, it was clear she had been extremely worried. She hugged him and cried. I prayed for her and him. Later, the child's father called me to express his extreme gratitude. Can I tell you that through all the crap I go through at work, this, this right here, makes it all worth it!!!! I thank God I responded!! I thank God this child grew in confidence in me!!! I thank God for the dispatcher who did all she could do to find this child's mother!! I thank God that nothing happened to the child before we got to him!!! And I thank God for his family that truly loves him!!! God is sooooooo good ya'll!!!
